Most settings change at once, without stopping the database server. Changing innodb_flush_method restarts it (usually a few seconds). If applying the optimal settings causes unexpected results, you can revert the changes at any moment.

The settings that depend on RAM, the databases and the disks are reviewed weekly, and you are notified when there are new optimizations to apply.
